One Loan Desk @ Main
Tuesday Sep 22, 2009
McAllen Public Library announces an important change to the loan desk at the Main Library: beginning October 5, 2009, the loan desk on the second floor will merge with the loan desk on the first floor.
What does this mean for you, our valued patron?
The books and audiovisual items you retrieve from the second floor will have to be checked out on the first floor. The loan desk on second will be converted into a reference desk, staffed by the faces you’ve come to rely on for assistance.
Why the change?
Combining our two loan desks into one location on the first floor enables us to consolidate the circulation staff. More staff means less waiting in line and more efficient service in general. It’ll take you a few steps more to walk (or ride the elevator) from one floor to another, but that’s a few steps more for an important move forward.
And that move forward leads directly to the new Main Library. Projected to open late 2010, the new Main Library will be located on the corner of N. 23rd St. and Nolana Ave. and will itself feature a single area for circulation services. Patrons can look forward to an area comprised of not only a staffed loan desk, but a row of computer stations for self-checkout (see image below).
Although the current Main Library will not offer self-checkout stations, the change on October 5 is a needed step in that direction.
