MPL Announces Two Milestones Ahead of Big Move

McAllen, TX – With the opening of its New Main Library only weeks away, McAllen Public Library announces two milestones in advance of its big move in December.

The first milestone is the launch of a new logo and tagline for the library system:

“Come December the public will experience a building that is not only massive, but modern and very colorful,” said Jose Gamez, Library Director. “We thought this was the right time to update the library’s brand name to reflect the new building and what it represents.”

While the logo draws on the new building’s unique window pattern and vibrant interior color scheme (preview both here: http://bit.ly/newmploct), the tagline sums up how the library aims to serve the community.

Continued Gamez, “It’s a reality these days that a library is more than books. This building was designed to serve the public's needs with conference rooms, electronic classrooms, Wi Fi hotspots, a public computer lab, café, and auditorium. It was designed to be a place where people and ideas meet and connect. That’s the spirit of the place.”

To celebrate the unveiling of its new logo and tagline, MPL will offer cake and punch to the public at all library locations on Tuesday, November 1, 3:00-5:00PM.

The second milestone is the closing of the Old Main Library at 601 North Main Street.

First opened in May 1950 as a memorial to veterans of World War II, the Old Main Library began its 61 years of service as a small brick building with two or three rooms. Over the decades it greatly expanded its footprint and its collection to encompass three stories and a collection of over 300,000 items.

Old Main will close its doors to the public on Wednesday, November 23, at 6:00PM. This will enable the library to move its collection and staff to the New Main Library at 4001 North 23rd Street and Nolana Avenue.

The grand opening of New Main will take place Saturday, December 10, at 10:00AM. More details to come.
