MPL to Celebrate Branch Libraries’ First Decade

MCALLEN, TX – On January 18, 2001, the Lark and Palm View Branch Libraries opened their doors for the first time. Ten years later, McAllen Public Library is pleased to observe that momentous day with an open invitation to the public to visit the library for cake, punch and a commemorative party favor.

All three locations will host “A Decade of Service: Happy Birthday, Lark and Palm View!” on Tuesday, January 18, 2011. The treats and party favor will be handed out free of charge on a first come, first served basis, according to the following schedule:

  • Main Library 3:00-5:00PM
  • Lark Branch 5:00-7:00PM
  • Palm View Branch 7:00-9:00PM

“I was Lark Manager when the branches opened,” said Jose Gamez, now Library Director. “This will be a simple but sincere way to remember that day and thank both branches for their first decade of service to the community.”

Since opening day the branch libraries, which are located within the Lark and Palm View Community Centers, have received a combined total of 3.5 million visits and checked out a combined total of 1.5 million books and audiovisual materials.

The birthday celebration will coincide with other special programs. Visit the library’s event calendar to see what else is going on January 18!
