Local History

The Local History Files consist of newspaper stories, pamphlets and similar materials covering nearly 1500 topics of local interest. For most topics, coverage begins in the mid-1970s, although some earlier materials are also present.

Where to Access Files

The files are housed in the reference department of the Main Library and can be used any time the library is open.

How to Access Files

If you wish to use the files, please come to the reference desk. Staff can show you a list of subject headings and suggest which files would best help you in your research. We will ask you to present a piece of ID, such as your library card or driver’s license. Your ID card will be held by the staff in a secure place while you use the files and then returned to you once you have returned the files.

Neither files nor individual items can be checked out, but self-service, coin-operated photocopiers are available nearby. The price of copies is $0.10 per page. Ledger size paper (11 in. x 17 in.) is available for the same price as letter size.

Aerial Photograph Collection of Hidalgo County

The library was awarded the Portal to Texas History Grant enabling a sample of the collection to be digitized by the University of North Texas - Digital Projects Unit. This digitized collection of 30 remote-sensing aerial images includes the City of McAllen and surrounding cities. The images were captured by Aeroflex Corporation, Robinson Aerial Surveys Division, to survey land use in Hidalgo County. The United States Department of Agriculture published the series, which dates from 1960-1983. This collection, along with many other Texas history materials, can be viewed via The Portal to Texas History.

Back Issues of The Monitor

If you prefer to view past issues of The Monitor (McAllen’s daily newspaper) you may do so on the 2nd floor of the Main Library.

The Library keeps the original paper copies for approximately 6-8 weeks, until we receive microfilm copies. The microfilm reels are also kept on the 2nd floor and can be viewed whenever the library is open. The cost of copying from the microfilm is $0.15 per page. The reader/printer is also self-service, coin-operated.
