FAQs
What types of books are accepted?
Books for children, teens, and adults may be considered for the Local Author Collection. Self-published books are welcome, but all submissions should be professionally edited, proofread, and designed. Books must include an ISBN and be available in hardcover or trade paperback format. E-book only and audio-only titles will not be considered.
What are the physical requirements?
Books must be sturdily bound and suitable for regular library circulation, including being returned through a book drop. For book series, only the first title in the series will be considered.
Does donating a book guarantee inclusion?
No. Inclusion in the Local Author Collection is not guaranteed, and all selection decisions are final. Books are reviewed by a selection committee based on presentation, readability, spelling and grammar, originality, and connection to the Rio Grande Valley.
What happens after I submit my book?
Library staff review each submission for possible inclusion in the collection. If selected, the book will be cataloged and added to the Local Author Collection at Main Library. Please allow up to 90 days for review, processing, and cataloging.
Will my donated copy be returned?
No. All donated books become the property of McAllen Public Library and cannot be returned.
What if my book is not selected?
Books that are not added to the Local Author Collection will be donated to the Library Bookstore.
Can I discuss my submission with library staff?
Due to the number of submissions received, library staff are unable to discuss individual titles or selection decisions with authors.
Who is considered a local author?
Authors who currently reside in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, or Willacy County and have a valid McAllen Public Library card are eligible to submit books for consideration.
